Last September, I began posting about religious hypocrites and their criminal acts. Among the highlighted rogues was Ted Haggard, the head preacher of New Life Ministries in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and friend of James Dobson, de facto leader of the ultra-right, super anti-gay, Focus on the Family.
One thing learned in this quest to “out” these hypocrites is that many of these perpetrators are Baptist clergy, the Southern Baptist Convention has chosen not to make any kind of predator check list, which might help individual churches in that denomination avoid hiring these guys. A site that does keep people aware of them is stopbaptistpredators. org.
However, even with the exposure of such predominant figures, the victimization by other supposed men of the cloth still continues as can be seen by these updates and new cases:
Salinas, California–Father Antonio Cortes, pastor at the Saint Mary of Nativity Catholic Chirch has Been Arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a teenage boy. Cortes is facing two counts of sexual molestation, one count of sodomy, and 20 counts of serving alcohol to a minor. Despite the abundance of child pornography found in the priest’s residence, some church parishioners are still trying to blame the victim who came forward.
Asheville, North Carolina–Roy Mace Honeycutt II, preacher affiliated with the Bethel Baptist Church of Asheville, NC, and the Trinity Baptist Church of Mars Hill, NC, was arrested for sex crimes against children over a 30 year time span. UPDATE: Honeycutt was sentenced to six years in prison.
DeKalb County, Indiana–Lane Andrews, pastor of New Life Ministries in Garrett, Indiana for 15 years has been charged with molesting his 7-year-old granddaughter.
Buckeye, Arizona–Charles Lawrence Carfrey, pastor of the Lord’s House Church, was charged with running a criminal syndicate, sexual conduct with a minor and sexual abuse. It appears that he manipulated and controlled church members so that the police had not been able to make a case against Carfrey until some of his flock finally left the church.
Jacksonville, Florida–Darrel Gilyard, pastor of the Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church, was arrested for sending lewd messages to underage girls, after 20 years of accusations of indecent conduct. Gilyard was purported to be one of the up and coming leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention. UPDATE: Gilyard has pleaded guilty to two charges and will be sentenced to three years in jail.
Mabank, Texas–Joshua Neal Ponder, Youth Minister of the First Baptist Church of Mabank youth minister was arrested for sexual assault of a 16-year-old male victim.
Kilpatrick, Alabama–Billy Masters, a 66-year-old preacher at Harvest Baptist Church was charged with first-degree sexual abuse of a 12-year-old boy who is a member of the church congregation. Previously, Masters had been convicted in 2001 and was in prison until 2007 for sexual crimes against three male victims.
Watertown, Minnesota–Dennis Hayes, pastor at St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, was charged with sexual contact with a minor and possession of child pornography.
And what of Ted Haggard? He hasn’t shown up on TV for awhile, but he does appear he’s a fairly active Twitterer. By looking at his thoughts there, he’s trying to stay in the spotlight and considers himself a celebrity. He doesn’t seem to acknowledge that he gets most of that attention from his fall after his relationship with Mike Jones, the male hustler that he hired for sex, came to light.
Tony Alamo is sitting in jail in Texarkana, Arkansas on juvenile sex charges. At the same time, some of his lawyers are fighting the Arkansas Department of Human Services, which has taken 36 children from Alamo’s followers for their protection. The Southern Poverty Law Center describes Alamo as the leader of “a cult that thrives on criticism of homosexuals, Roman Catholics and the government”. This group’s fight with the government is quite messy, but there is an entire website devoted to working for the conviction of Alamo and the other cases surrounding members of his group at tonyalamonews.com
Again, why spend the time researching and writing an entire post on these creeps? Because they are the leaders of their churches, and week after week, they preach to hundreds and thousands of people who hold them up in other. They use their power and status to control their followers’ lives in almost every aspect. They are evangelicals and other religious hypocrites who help keep homophobia and and anti-gay legislation going. They need to be exposed for what they are: liars and hypocrites.
